Orlando

Modelmaking (2nd Year Project)

"Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando' is a novel that delves into the complexities of gender and time, detailing the extraordinary journey of Orlando across centuries of transformation. For this Project, we used the film adaption written by Sally Potter.

"The lady is aflame and silent"

This scene from 'Orlando" is a significant as it portrays the stark differences in how Orlando is perceived after her transformation. As a man Orlando enjoyed the respect and attention from the men in the room, as a woman she gets ridiculed for attempting to join their discussion.

I wanted to showcase Orlando in a hyper feminine costume, with tons of frills and bows, having her skirt almost swallow her since she's so uncomfortable with her new- found femininity.

For my final prop I decided to make a fan for Orlando. I used AutoCAD to design the sticks, which I then laser cut out of wood and cardboard. I ironed the folds on the fabric which I then painted with fabric paint and attached to the sticks.

Done as part of 'Design Histories' module in Second Year.
